Students can donate items next week, Monday through Thursday to help those who are involved with the wildfires that recently burned more than 1.4 million acres of the northern Texas Panhandle.
After strong winds Monday and Tuesday, a total of 12 wildfires were reported. The biggest wildfire, the Smokehouse Creek Fire which continues to burn. It has burnt 1.2 million acres by itself and has grown to be the largest wildfire in Texas history.
“We’re having a drive to help the people who are affected by the wildfires,” Junior Class President, Kerri Davis said. “If their house burned down, if they lost a lot of things to the fires, or if they were directly affected.”
Some of the items that are being collected consist of hydration specific drinks, non-perishable snacks, cleaning supplies and more.
“We called the city of Borger and Stinnett along with a church in Stinnett and asked what they specifically needed,” Davis said. “We were thinking we could donate non-perishables at first, but then they told us that they need cleaning supplies and even informed us this morning that they needed toilet paper and paper towels.”
Students can drop off items at the north entrance beginning next Monday and for any questions, students can reach out to Hayden Blankenship.
“I think it is important to step into their shoes,” Davis said. “They’ve lost everything that they have. By donating it’s the least we can do. Even if it is just donating one, item will help, everything helps.”
