Program to teach students consequences of drunken, distracted driving

CHS Every 15 Minutes

Canyon High will present the Every 15 Minutes program April 7-8.

The “Every 15 Minutes” two-day program will take place Thursday and Friday, April 7 and 8.

The entire student body will view the aftermath of a mock car wreck Thursday morning. Emergency personal, including the Canyon Police Department, Canyon Fire Department and a LIFESTAR helicopter, will be present so that students can understand the possible consequences of drinking and driving. Residents of neighborhoods surrounding Canyon High should expect to hear sirens and see emergency vehicles.

Every 15 minutes throughout the remainder of the day, selected students will have their faces painted white, tombstones hung in the commons area and obituaries read through the intercom. Friday, sophomores, juniors and seniors will watch a video of the wreck and parents’ reactions and listen to speaker Sean Carter during assembly period. Freshmen will watch the video the following Monday. Principal Tim Gilliland said the program is usually done every four years so students can see it at least once.

“The goal is to make our students aware that bad decisions can be deadly,” Gilliland said. “We try to do this before prom so that students will make good decisions. I think it’s going to be the most powerful speaker yet.”
