Six Flags surprise
School nurse recalls amusement park marriage proposal
When Brooke Moore lost her boyfriend among the crowd during a Christmas performance, she never imagined she would spot him standing on the stage with a microphone. Little did she know, she would soon be joining him on the stage for a special surprise.
In winter of 1999, Jamisen Hancock took the stage at Six Flags, invited his girlfriend to join him, and proposed to her in front of her whole family and 200-300 people in attendance.
“He said something really sweet like, ‘God gave me you,’ and things like that,” school nurse Brooke Hancock said. “And then the way he asked the question was really funny. He said, ‘I was just wondering, will you marry me?’”
The couple met at Frank Phillips College, Brooke on a basketball scholarship and Jamisen on a baseball scholarship.
“When I sat next to him in A & P,” Brooke Hancock said. “I’ll be honest–I didn’t really like him at first. But it didn’t take me long to realize that this man loved God and had his heart in the right place.”
Brooke had been dating Jamisen for a year before he proposed to her at Six Flags.
“I was crying, and I was covering my face,” Brooke Hancock said. “But I was ready. I loved Jamisen and I was ready to get married.”
After marrying so young, her advice for young couples is to pick the right person, use your gut feeling, seek counseling and meet the family. She also said marriage is a struggle, but in the end, marriage is worth the while.
“There are going to be good times and bad times,” she said. “But you’ve got to remember why you got married in the first place.”
