The varsity boys soccer team finished its season as district champions after Tuesday’s double-overtime defeat to Clint 5-2.

The team was named district champs after defeating Pampa with a score of 3-0. Head soccer coach Jeremy Chettinger said the team set a goal at the beginning of the season to become district champions.

“We created some standards for how we wanted to reach that goal,” Chettinger said. “Then we tried to live up to those standards on a daily basis.”

The team faced Pampa, Borger and Dumas in district play. Chettinger said competing in 4-A has equaled the playing field for the team.

“I think it’s the same way for all the other teams in 4-A,” Chettinger said. “You’re going to have good schools, but you’re not going to have those standout schools like an Allen in 6-A.”

Senior Beau Johnson was named district MVP and to First Team All-District at the end of the season.

“We’ve definitely left behind a legacy this season,” Johnson said. “The standards have gone up.”

Junior Cadence Maynard was named to the Second Team All-District as a midfielder.

“Compared to previous years, it’s the best we’ve done,” Maynard said. “In past seasons, we haven’t really given that much to soccer. This year, it seems like everybody gave it 110% no matter what happened.”

Maynard said the team’s big takeaway has been no matter what happens in the game to keep going.

“You can’t sit down and pout about it,” Maynard said. “Your team is relying on you. You have to keep going as hard as you can.”

Maynard said the team practiced no matter the time of year.

“After the season last year, some of us went and practiced in 15 degree weather,” Maynard said. “It was cold, but we still practiced. We just practiced all year round. We’re always playing. We always have a foot on the ball.”

Junior Emmanuel Castillo said the team’s main goal throughout the season was to improve each game.

“Each game our defense got better,” Castillo said. “Our communication, our passing got better. We didn’t focus on the score, we tried to fix the mistakes we would make in the game.”

Castillo said in previous years, the team’s biggest weakness has been selfishness.

“Soccer is a team sport,” Castillo said. “You have to work together. You can’t be selfish. You have to be selfless. It doesn’t matter who scores the goal. It’s as a team that we work together to score.”
