Wind tore through the Palo Duro Creek course as the girls golf team battled the elements. Dangerous gusts caused the game to come to an untimely end, but the girls and boys golf teams powered through the first of two district games.

Girls currently stand at third place with a score of 376, only three strokes ahead of Randall. Boys hold second place with a 16-stroke lead of 312. Both teams will compete in the second District game to advance to Regional with girls playing March 30 in Hereford and boys playing April 4 in Amarillo.

“The boys have gone to regionals the past two years,” said sophomore varsity player Macy Mitchell. “However, I don’t know the last time the girls have advanced as a team. It’s really humbling, and it’s pretty crazy  that we’ve come this far so quickly.”

The two teams with the lowest composite score from the district games advance to regionals, an accomplishment Mitchell said she did not expect to achieve.

“We were expecting a lower score,” Mitchell said. “Most of us just started playing about a year and a half ago, and we’re in pretty good shape.”

Individual placements include Mitchell in third place, senior Andrew Brewer tied for second place and senior Max Mitchell in fourth place. While the teams planned to prepare this week, the Palo Duro Creek course where they practice is closed for aeration.

“It’s kind of scary, the boys will probably be off all week since PDC is closed,” Mitchell said. “It won’t affect our playing, though. If we can just get out to the range and hit some balls, we’ll be pretty set.”
