Girls soccer team aims for next win against Palo Duro

The girls varsity soccer team will play the Palo Duro Dons 5 p.m. Feb. 12 at the CHS field.

Monday’s game against the Dumas Demonettes ended in a tie with a score of 1-1.

“We tied Dumas, and in the four years that I’ve played soccer, we’ve never lost or tied to Dumas, so it was really embarrassing and disappointing,” senior Mallory Shehan said. “In the first half we really didn’t play that well, but in the second half we played a lot better. We have a lot of potential, and I think the more we practice, the better we’re going to get.”

The team won their first tournament, the United Invitational soccer tournament in Wichita Falls, Jan. 15.

“Going into the tournament I was really nervous, but I knew that with all the hard work we put in every day, we could win,” sophomore Kate Mischak said. “We just had to apply all that we do in practice to the game.”

Mischak said the defense was strong as long as they were patient and didn’t stab or dive for the ball.

“We also knew that we had a kick-butt mid-field if they were on top of their game and ready to go,” Mischak said. “Our forwards can put it in as long as they maintain their composure in the goalie box. Overall, I knew that we definitely could win as long as we didn’t get sucked into old habits and played smart.”

After placing third in previous years, Mischak said the team’s goal is to place first in district.

“We have done great this season, and I think it’s because of all of the time and effort we put in and all the pre-district scrimmages that worked out the kinks in our system,” Mischak said. “As a team we all play smart. We keep our composure and do what we know how to do.”

Shehan said she began playing soccer at a young age, but continued to play for reasons beyond the actual game.

“I started playing when I was in first grade, and it was the one thing I was kind of good at,” Shehan said. “I kept playing and a lot of it is for my teammates. I really like the game and I enjoy soccer because of the people.”

Junior Obie Dominguez said each player brings something different to the field and they play together.

“I enjoy the beauty of the game,” Dominguez said “I have grown up playing and watching the sport, so to me it’s not just a game. It’s a passion that’s very dear to me. Soccer has shown me hard work pays off and the importance of practicing to get better.”
