The softball team celebrates the win advancing them to the regional semifinals.

The varsity softball team will play Aledo Friday, May 22 and Saturday, May 23 for the regional semifinal series. Friday’s game will be at 7 p.m. in Hermleigh, and Saturday’s game is scheduled for 11 a.m. The team defeated the Lubbock Cooper Pirates in two games during the regional quarterfinal series last weekend.

Head Coach Nicole Coffee said the team looked really strong against Cooper.

“They put a lot of pressure on Cooper early and that helps keep momentum on our side throughout the game,” Coffee said. “I would like to see us take the same approach going into this weekend against Aledo.”

Junior centerfielder Cambry Hedger said she performed well last weekend and is ready to do the same thing in the following round.

“The first game I came out ready to hit,” Hedger said. “As lead off, I need to make sure I get the team pumped early in the game. So, I focused on every little thing and made sure I was ready to go. I went 5 for 5 on Friday with a 2 run homerun. This week during practice, I am focusing on the small things to make sure I come out and produce just like I did last weekend, and perform the best I can for my team.”

Sophomore third baseman Sloane Precure said the team needs to focus on mental toughness.

“We need to focus on controlling the controllable,” Precure said. “Errors are going to happen, but we can’t let them get to us. In the end, this is just another game. We just need to play our best game because that is all we can do.”
