Net gain: tennis team racks up wins
The varsity tennis team will face Caprock Saturday at Caprock High School.
The varsity tennis team started off their season 3-1 in district play, with one loss to Randall (7-12). The team has won the games against Palo Duro (19-0), Dumas (19-0), and Hereford (18-1). Sophomore Wesley Cox is confident in how the team has performed.
“The team has done better than expected,” Cox said. “There’s still a lot of improving to be done.”
Junior Scott Cornelius said the team has done very well this season.
“We’ve fought really hard for every match,” Cornelius said. “Nobody on the team gives up, and that’s what counts.”
If the team practices hard enough, Cornelius said the team can win both the district and state meets.
“Our biggest challenge will be Randall,” Cornelius said. “If we prepare well, we can definitely pull out a win over them.”
Sophomore Abi Dillehay said she expects the team to keep winning.
“We’ve all stepped it up and done really well,” Dillehay said. “Everyone is always there and cheering for each other.”
Cornelius said his favorite part about the fall season is the support the team has for each other.
“We all get to be close in team season,” Cornelius said. “I love having the team go from just being my team to being my best friends.”
