Lady Eagles dominate area track meet
The varsity Lady Eagle track team won the area championship yesterday at Lowery Field in Lubbock. Canyon finished with 148 points, finishing 47 points ahead of the second-place team, Frenship.
The top four girls who placed at area will advance to the regional meet April 25 and 26 in Abilene.
At the very last minute, sophomore Christian Moreno stepped as the first leg for sophomore Izzy Wilson in the mile relay.
“Maybe five minutes before the race started, Ihad to run to check in and then got on the line,” Moreno said. “Before the race started, (Coach) Baca had told me when I got on the line, to pay attention to the guy with the gun so I wouldn’t jump or step consecutively on the white line or we would be disqualified. He told me, ‘You earned it.'”
The girls went on to win first place in the mile relay and set an area record with a time of 3:52.80. Senior Sommer Wilder also set an area meet record in the 400 meter. Senior Kaitlyn Rodriguez won two gold medals, including one for her own area meet record finish in the 800 meter.
