Undefeated football team clinches district championship
The varsity football team extended their perfect record to 9-0 last night after defeating Amarillo High 49-28, securing the district championship for the Eagles.
Canyon set the tone quickly in the game, holding the lead 14-0 at the end of the first quarter after two touchdown passes to senior Tanner Nease and sophomore Owen Carver.
The Eagles scored once more before the Sandies made it onto the score board. With a lead of 21-7, junior Derrick Spencer ran a 99-yard kickoff return back to boost Canyon’s lead to 28-7. Amarillo High scored with 23 seconds remaining in the first half.
The second half began with a Sandie fumble, giving Canyon the ball on Amarillo High’s 22-yard line. Senior quarterback Blake Weaver ran a 22-yard touchdown, 34-14. The Sandies responded with a score on their following drive, and a two-yard touchdown run by senior Chris Spencer ended the third quarter 41-21.
A two-yard touchdown run by Weaver and a final touchdown by Amarillo High ended the game at 49-28.
“It is an amazing feeling beating Amarillo High,” senior lineman Brice Boren said. “We knew we could beat them, but not very many other people believed in us. We went out and proved that we were the best team on the field. It’s the first time we’ve won the district in several years and it’s a great feeling to bring that gold football back to Canyon where it belongs.”
Canyon will face Palo Duro in their final district game next Friday at 7 p.m. at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.
“PD is a good team,” Boren said. “We need to come out and play our best again. We need to go ahead and finished out the undefeated season and not overlook them. We need to come out focused next week.”
