Tennis places at AHS team tourney, optimistic about season
The varsity tennis team finished in third place Saturday at the Amarillo High School Team Tournament.
This was Canyon’s first tournament under new head coach Johnny Gonzales.
“Coach Gonzales is a great coach,” senior Austin Wheeler said. “He motivates us as well as works us in many ways.”
After beating Hereford 19-0 and Tascosa 13-6, the Eagles lost 8-11 to Lubbock Coronado. Their final match was against Frenship, and Canyon had no trouble defeating the Tigers 18-1.
“Our team is looking stronger than we have in a few years,” Wheeler said. “Coach is trying to rebuild our tradition and team chemistry.”
Wheeler said that their goal for this season is to make it to the state tournament, and he said he believes that state is a very realistic goal.
“We expect to win not only district, but the newly added area tournament as well,” Wheeler said. “This should be the best season we’ve had since I’ve played for our high school.”
