The baseball team took game one of their 4A Region 1 quarterfinal series against Amarillo High 4-2 today. The game pitted each team’s aces against each other in the series opener. Senior Grant Glaze (11-1) earned the victory with a two-run, three-hit performance that lasted six and two-thirds innings.
Junior Blake Weaver scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning off a hit from senior Jayden Parker. Parker scored off of Amarillo starter Taylor Burgess (8-2), who entered the game with a 0.95 earned run average (ERA). Amarillo scored in the bottom of the 2nd to tie the game at 1-1 from a wild pitch that advanced a runner home from third.
Neither team scored again until the 6th inning. Canyon escaped a bases-loaded situation in the 4th inning with a double play that denied the runner going home. Canyon scored two runs in the 6th inning and one in the 7th. Burgess pitched against the Eagles for the entire game. Amarillo scored one run in the 7th inning and loaded the bases, which then included the winning runner. Senior Thomas Garland relieved Glaze in the jam and closed the game with a strikeout, earning the save as well.
The Eagles play Amarillo again tomorrow at Wilder Park on the WTAMU campus. Game 2 of the playoff series begins at 2:00 p.m. If Amarillo wins, Game 3 will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2. This series winner will advance to the Regional semifinals against the Birdville/Rider winner.
