Both boys and girls track teams are represented at the area meet today at West Texas A&M University after scoring qualifying times at the district meet last Friday.
With changes in the route to state, runners now have to place in the top four to move from district to area and area to region. From region, the top two in each event will advance to state. Results show that runners from this district should continue to advance to regionals.
“The 1600 was one of the fastest in the panhandle in the last 30 years with two runners under 4:25,” Coach Wes Kirton said.
The boys new track coach, Adam Cummings, said more students need to be involved in the program to show other schools Canyon’s boys track program can be competitive not only at a district level.
“We need to continue to build the team aspect of track,” Cummings said.
In preparation for region, Cummings said runners will continue their routine training. Cummings’ goal is for individuals to peak at area in order to place and advance to region. Cummings said all runners are fine tuning in their events to achieve this goal.
“I can’t say enough about the boys’ attitudes and work they’ve put in,” Cummings said. “The boys have raced strong from the start and continue to improve.”
