The Lady Eagles completed their district season Tuesday night by defeating Palo Duro 49-44, making their district record 7-3.
Canyon held the lead throughout the game and was up 23-16 by half time. After a battle until the very end, the Lady Eagles closed out the win on senior night.
“It was really a good win,” head coach Joe Lombard said. “It was a good way to end those seniors’ career here at our high school gym and to beat the number one team in the district.”
Seniors Kylee Murgel and Kyndal Davis have been the frontrunners in this year’s Lady Eagle lineup.
“Because those guys have been the only two seniors this year, we’ve put a lot of responsibility on them and they’ve done a great job,” Lombard said. “We appreciate all of their efforts, leadership and their work ethic. They’re helping to lead us along the way so we’re grateful, and obviously we want to play well for them as much as the rest of the team.”
Lombard said that he was pleased with the way Canyon handled the ball against Palo Duro, and that the team used their previous loss against Palo Duro as a lesson on how to become more prepared.
“The last time we played Palo Duro, we were in the same position at half time but we were unable to finish it,” Lombard said. “We had a bad third quarter and couldn’t get the job done. We needed a win like that to get some momentum going into the playoffs. It’s going to give us some confidence. We feel like we could even play better so that’s the exciting thing.”
Canyon will play their first play-off game next Tuesday night in Dimmit against Frenship at 7:30 p.m.
“We hope to cause a little stir and get on a roll in playoffs,” Lombard said. “So we need to play well and use this win as a confidence thing, and so I’m excited about Tuesday night getting to play Frenship.”
