The varsity football team faced off against Amarillo High Friday night in the annual “Senior Night” game. Amarillo High dominated Canyon by a final score of 44-0.
Amarillo High ran the ball to the two-yard line on the first play of the game, and two plays later, scored their first touchdown of the night. They advanced their lead to 14-0 with a 55-yard touchdown. At the end of the first quarter, the Eagles held the Sandies to a field goal chance that was called not good.
Amarillo High scored one touchdown in the second quarter, ending the first half 21-0. The Amarillo High defense only allowed the Eagles one first down in the first half.
At the beginning of the third quarter, Amarillo High got a safety to make the score 23-0. After two more Sandie touchdowns, the third quarter ended at 37-0.
Senior Graeson Cook intercepted an Amarillo High pass, but the Sandie defense stopped the Canyon offense yet again. Amarillo High scored their finals points of the night with six minutes left in the game.
“Defensively we started the game off in the first half pretty well actually,” junior Dylan Douglass, who led Canyon with 18 tackles, said. “However, the offense never took advantage of the chances the defense offered them.”
The Canyon Eagles play their last district game Thursday night against the Palo Duro Dons at Dick Bivins Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
“Our main priority is stopping the run and containing the quarterback out of the pass play,” Douglass said. “The big deal this week is containing any of their big players because they’re fast. Special teams are very important this week due to their reputation of returning kicks and punts.”
Canyon’s first playoff game is against the Frenship Tigers at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium Friday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m.
