The varsity volleyball team defeated the third state-ranked Amarillo High Sandies in a thrilling five games, 25-23, 11-25, 25-18, 10-25 and 15-12.
This is Amarillo High’s first year to be in Canyon’s district after moving down to 4A from 5A.
“Going into the first the game we were nervous, but excited, and ready to play,” senior Callie Ray said. “After winning the first game we knew they were beatable and if we played like we knew how to, we could win.”
During match, the back and forth scoring between the two battling teams caused the tension and excitement to be felt throughout the gym. After the fourth game, Canyon had one last huddle before starting their final set.
“Coach Hammit and Coach Morath had us calm down and told us to go back to the basics,” Ray said. “They pumped us up, along with the dirty half dozen [Canyon High student fans].”
After the final point was scored, closing the set at 15-12, the Lady Eagles and Canyon fans went wild with enthusiasm.
“That was probably the most excited we’ve ever been,” Ray said. “That win was monumental.”
The Lady Eagles will face off against Palo Duro tomorrow in Amarillo. Freshmen begin at 11 a.m., JV at 12 p.m. and varsity at 1 p.m.
“We know it’s not going to be an easy win, and we’re going to have to play well,” Ray said. “But if we execute and play like we have been, we’re going to come out with a win.”
