The varsity football team defeated the Monohans Lobos in Lubbock Friday night by a final score of 24-14 after a 17-point comeback by the Eagles.
Monohans took a quick lead, 0-7, in the first quarter. Senior running back Hunter Burrell tied the game at 7-7, before the Lobos scored a second time, 7-14 by the end of the first half.
At the end of the third quarter, junior starting quarterback Blake Weaver left the game after a high ankle sprain.
Sophomore Ryan Guevarra scored a field goal to finish the third quarter 10-14.
Sophomore Cade McCallie took over as quarterback and connected with senior Graeson Cook to give Canyon the lead, 17-14.
Senior running back Steven Hansen scored the final points of the game, continuing the Eagles’ perfect season.
“I was definitely relieved after we got the lead,” McCallie said. “I didn’t realize the game was almost over until I looked up at the scoreboard and saw that there was only three minutes left before that drive.”
Weaver will be out for two weeks due to injury, so McCallie will be the starting quarterback during that time.
“I’m not nervous yet, but I’ll be nervous by the time the games comes,” McCallie said. “But I’ll be ready to play.”
The Canyon Eagles will face off in their district rivalry against Randall this Friday in the annual “Pink Out” game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Kimbrough Stadium.
“We’re going to be well prepared for Randall,” McCallie said. “We just have to watch out for their quarterback and Logan Brittan [receiver], and offensively we’ll have to move the ball well.”
