The varsity football team defeated Dumas last Friday night with their first district win, 49-28.
The Demons were first on the scoreboard within the first two minutes of the game, and after Canyon was forced to punt, they scored again leading the Eagles 0-14.
Canyon’s first points of the game were scored by senior running back Walker Horn. Canyon trailed 7-21 by the end of the first quarter.
Senior wide receiver Thomas Garland led the Eagles into the second quarter with a touchdown, 14-21. Dumas would score one final time before Horn would end the first half with a touchdown. Canyon trailed Dumas 21-28 at half time.
Sophomore quarterback Cade McCallie scored a ten-yard touchdown to tie the game at 28-28. McCallie would score again to give Canyon the lead 35-28. Within the next 30 seconds, Canyon would score again after an interception run in by senior Graeson Cook. Senior Jace Vessels also intercepted a Demon pass with seven minutes left in the third quarter. McCallie scored Canyon’s final points of the night to close the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was scoreless, and the Eagles held onto their lead to defeat the Demons 49-28.
“First half we had to make some adjustments, stopping the deep ball and stopping the run,” Garland said. “Second half we made those adjustments and held Dumas to only 28-yards in the second half. Offensive wise, we got the swing of things, and ran the ball in to make the final result 49-28.”
The 6-1 Eagles will face off against the Caprock Longhorns today at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
“Our secondary is going to play a big role for all of the passes Caprock offense will be throwing our way, Garland said. “We’re manning up on Bustose [Caprock receiver] and we are really going to be relying on our front five to stop the ball. Cade’s going to be quarterback and this will be a big game for him. We are going to be throwing a lot of short game and running up the gut.”
