The varsity football team defeated the Caprock Longhorns Friday night 34-7, advancing their record to 7-1.
After a scoreless first quarter, junior Autry Dowd fired up the Eagles with an interception. Senior Walker Horn scored the first points of the game. With four minutes left in the first half, sophomore Issac Garland put Canyon up 14-0.
Horn scored again in the third quarter, and after a fumbled snap on the field goal, Canyon was ahead 20-0. Caprock scored their only touchdown of the night with 1:20 left in the third quarter.
Senior Graeson Cook caught a 35-yard pass for an Eagle touchdown, 27-7. After an interception by sophomore Hunter Reece, Horn scored Canyon’s final points with a 15-yard touchdown run. Senior Jace Vessels closed the game with a final interception for the Eagles.
Canyon’s defense has so far allowed the least amount of points scored by any team in district 3-4A.
“All around as a team we played real solid against Caprock and that is going to help prepare us to beat Amarillo High,” Horn said. “Our defense played very well holding Caprock to seven points, which is the lowest they have been held to all year. Our offense was very productive in scoring 34 points.”
Canyon will play the Amarillo High Sandies Friday night at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
“We think that Amarillo High is overlooking us,” Horn said. “We’re going to come out and show them and the whole panhandle what Canyon Eagle football is all about.”
