The varsity football team defeated the Pampa Harvesters in rainy conditions Friday by a final score of 44-20.
The Eagles took the lead quickly, leading Pampa 14-0 before half of the first quarter had passed. After scoring on their first drive of the night, Canyon gained possession again after senior Jace Vessels tipped a pass that was intercepted by sophomore Cade McCallie. The Eagles advanced the lead to 21-0 before the first quarter concluded.
Halfway through the second quarter, senior Graeson Cook intercepted a pass and ran it back to boost the score to 28-0. The Eagles led Pampa 37-0 by halftime.
After a 30-minute lightning delay, the game resumed with a touchdown by senior Thomas Garland, pushing the Eagles lead to 44-0.
During the fourth quarter, the Harvesters finally made it on the scoreboard within the last eight minutes in the game. After a dropped snap by Canyon, Pampa ran the ball back for a touchdown and later had two successful offensive drives. The final score came to 44-20.
“We played hard and really well in the first half, and I liked our intensity throughout the game,” senior Travis McMorrough said. “We are really coming together as a team.”
The varsity boys will travel to Plainview this Friday to battle the Bulldogs. Kickoff is at 7:30.
“It’s going to be a tough one and will be a good game throughout all four quarters but we will come out on top,” McMorrough said.
