Sophomore Arin Rice competed in the State UIL Meet May 13, winning a gold medal in the 800 meter run and a bronze in the 1600 meter run. Rice competed in two races, the 800 meter run, then after a two-to-three hour break, later she ran the 1600 meter. In the final leg of the 800, she took the lead and outsprinted every other girl in the race.
“It was probably the most exciting moment of my life,” Rice said. “I was really excited.”
Rice took gold with a time of 2:14.
In the 1600 meter run, Rice had to face every great distance runner in the 4A category. Despite the odds of a sophomore placing, Rice won third place with a time of 4:58.
“I set personal records in both events,” Rice said. “Not many people can say they won the 800 as a sophomore.”
Rice finished the season by earning silver in The Congress Mile race May 21 in Austin, which pitted the sophomore against the 47 fastest milers in Texas.
