The high school boys choir rehearse their individual piece for Boys Night Out in the choir room.

The high school, junior high and intermediate boys choirs will perform in the annual Boys Night Out concert in the auditorium at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23.

Each choir will perform separate pieces with a combined piece for the finale. High school choir director Brandon Farren said the concert, which has been an annual event, continues to be a strong recruitment tool for the younger men to see what their high school careers would look like if they choose to continue the choral program.

“It’s a chance for all the junior high and intermediate level boys to see what the program looks like in its entirety,” Farren said. “They get to see what football looks like on Friday night and basketball when they play, but they never get to really see the choir in action. In Canyon, choir is a huge part of who we are. This is a chance to get them on stage with our men.”

Many of the pieces performed at Boys Night Out will come from the choirs’ contests.

“The sixth-grade boys are working on their contest music,” Farren said. “The junior high boys will sing a couple of their contest pieces, and the high school men will sing some of their contest pieces.”

Farren said a difficult part of Boys Night Out is finding a piece that matches the skill level of each choir, while still maintaining the interest of the singers.

“The hardest part is finding a piece that isn’t too hard for the young kids, but not so easy that the high school men think it’s dumb,” Farren said. “Finding a piece that everyone can dig into and enjoy without it being too easy or too hard–that’s the hard part.”
