Junior finishes golf season at regionals
Junior golfer Libby Belcher ended her season at the 5A Regionals Girls Golf Tournament in Lubbock last week. Belcher was the lone Canyon High player to advance to the girls regional tournament after the team placed third at district April 6 in Amarillo.
“In the first district round, I played good enough to be in the first place medalist position and I held my place in the second round,” Belcher said. “I went to regionals as the first place medalist from our district.”
Belcher said she had a good practice round that Sunday and felt ready for the next day even though inclement weather was to be expected.
“I played really good,” Belcher said. “Then, that night, we found out there was a 100 percent chance of rain and the next morning was the round of regionals.”
The weather the next day brought heavy rain and 40 miles per hour wind gusts. The officials called off the tournament after the participants played nine holes.
“It was torturous, but, luckily, I didn’t play too bad,” Belcher said.
Belcher said the weather the next day was nice, however, they had to play the nine holes they missed the previous day on top of the 18 holes they were already scheduled to play.
“We had to play 27 holes,” Belcher said. “It was really tiring because it was nine more holes than usual, but it was worth it because I had worked hard to get there.”
