Stage manager chauffeurs musical
On stage, the production goes on smoothly. Actors run their lines and the sets are in place. Behind the scenes, however, organized chaos floods the darkness behind the curtain. The stage manager cuts through the chaos to help bring the production together.
In his first year as stage manager of the musical, Bingham said he enjoys being the stage manager because he makes sure everything on stage runs smoothly and is the mainline of communication between the stage technicians and the actors. Bingham also worked as sound director during last year’s one-act play.
“I don’t like being on stage,” Bingham said. “I’ve always been interested in what goes on backstage and how it all works.”
However, in this production Bingham will also appear on stage as a chauffeur. Bingham said he is excited for the opportunity.
“I didn’t mean for it to happen,” Bingham said. “I don’t say anything, but I get to drive the car as more of a comedic role.”
In addition to appearing on stage, Bingham said he has faced new challenges in the production of the musical.
“Our lead, Christian Theiss, broke his hand,” Bingham said. “We also had to build a car. The musical requires a car, and the stage and the budget couldn’t support an actual car so we had to build one out of wood.”
Bingham said he enjoys being stage manager because it allows him to have a unique relationship with the actors.
“I make sure they know their lines and get the props and sets moved in a matter of seconds,” Bingham said. “Being a stage manager means everything backstage works perfectly so the show is a success.”
