“She’s going on a bear hunt. She’s gonna catch a big one. She’s not afraid.” The lyrics of this popular preschool song became a reality for junior Ally Brock on a trip she took last summer.

Brock shot and killed a bear on a hunting trip with her father last summer in Peace River, Alberta, Canada.

“It was really scary but exciting,” Brock said. “We had been hunting for five days and this was the first bear we had seen.”

Brock said the bear came into her view, but she could not get a clear shot and the bear ran off.

“After the bear ran off, we sat and waited for 45 minutes for it to come back,” Brock said. “I thought I was going to die from the cold.”

Brock said the bear did return and went broadside of her. She had a clear shot.

“I shot it through the scope, and I saw the blood splatter,” Brock said. “We sat and waited for a little while to make sure the bear was dead.”

After they had made sure the bear was dead, they took photos with their kill and got some people to help them haul the bear back to their camp. Brock said the bear will be made into a rug.

“I felt pretty excited,” Brock said.

Brock said her favorite part of hunting, however, is not the actual kill.

“My favorite thing about hunting is the time I get to spend with my dad,” Brock said. “He is very special to me because I only see him a few times a year.”
