CISD is trying a new enforcement about cell phones, while also yielding to the parent’s concerns, such as safety without them.
Students are concerned about the new enforcement to help teachers and students connect throughout class.
“At first it felt rather harsh, but now I can’t even tell that there is a new policy,” senior Tyson Spencer said. “I think the communication with the students about the new enforcement would have made them feel better about the enforcement.”
English teacher Ellen Ward said she disagrees with this claim because she thought phones were a distraction and should be off during class.
“I think that students can spend the entire day on their phones without even realizing it. It has a very negative impact on them academically and socially,” Ward said. “I think setting the expectation for everyone and reminding students periodically of the expectation is very important.”
Assistant Principal Justin Cranfill spoke about the enforcement being beneficial to the learning environment and the students’ success.
“The policy has benefitted the classes due to the students being able to focus more on what they are learning,” Cranfill said. “I agree that students should spend more time working on schoolwork, and by implementing these new expectations we will hopefully teach students how to use their phones responsibly.”
