Twenty-two students earned ribbons at the spring Eagle Invitational UIL Academic Meet.

The academics team will travel to the UIL District Meet March 23 after 22 students placed at the Eagle Invitational Meet Saturday, Feb. 24. The meet was the last practice meet before the district meet.

Along with individual awards, the calculator applications, mathematics and journalism teams earned first place as groups. Students and coaches hosted the competition to raise money for future academic meets. Freshman Samantha Fernandez placed first in calculator applications for her grade and fourth overall.

“I was really excited because I worked really hard to work on geometry problems so I could get the score I wanted,” Fernandez said. “The person right next to me was really fast, and I was worried I wasn’t going fast enough. I just zoned in on my calculator and the numbers.”

Freshman Erin Bell earned second place in informative extemporaneous speaking.

“My biggest problem is remembering what sources go with what facts,” Bell said. “You have four or five sources to go with different facts, and you have to remember not to mix it up. Ten minutes before I had to give my speech, I just read it over and over to be sure I didn’t slip up.”

Bell said she participates in prose interpretation, Lincoln-Douglass Debate and extemporaneous speaking.

“My goal for this year was trying out as many things as I could and getting a grip on the basic stuff so next year, I can get to region,” Bell said. “I’ve been keeping up with current events and practicing over and over again. I enjoyed learning about the world outside of Canyon.”

In addition to calculator applications, Fernandez is on the spelling team.

“Calculator applications is easier than class right now,” Fernandez said. “Knowing stuff about the calculator helps in class. You get little hints.”

Bell said she feels her speaking skills have developed over time.

“You’re not going to succeed at first,” Bell said. “If you keep on trying, you’ll eventually get it.”
