Relay For Life will begin 6 p.m. Friday, April 15 at Buffalo Sports Park and will end 6 a.m. Saturday morning. Proceeds will assist cancer research through the American Cancer Society.

Relay For Life is an annual event to raise money for cancer research, celebrate cancer survivors and the caretakers of cancer patients, support cancer patients and pay tribute to cancer victims. The CHS Student Council and Key Club will sell baked goods, fruit, water and t-shirts at Relay For Life. Students may also participate independently.

“Anybody can come through Walk for Life and walk and buy stuff and donate,” senior and Student Council co-president Scott Cornelius said. “It’s a really good way to raise money for cancer research and to find the cure for cancer.”

Apart from walking, donating and fundraising, Relay For Life provides other opportunities to honor those affected by cancer.

“We have these brown paper bags with candles in them called luminarias,” Cornelius said. “You can buy one for a survivor, or you can buy one for someone who died from cancer and write their names on it and write whatever message you want to write to them on it.”

Relay For Life provides an opportunity for students to help advance cancer research.

“Every lap is to help people,” sophomore and Key Club president Madi Rueda said. “When you participate, it’s just really heartwarming to get to know that you’re helping.”

For Cornelius, the ability to assist cancer research is not only important, but personal.

“I love it,” Cornelius said. “I’ve known people who’ve had cancer and have died from cancer, and it’s a really great way for me to give back to them and give back to the people who took care of them through that time.”
