Officer Cody Jones received the Man of the Year award from the Canyon Chamber of Commerce Feb. 6.

The Canyon Chamber of Commerce awarded school resource officer Cody Jones Man of the Year Feb. 6 at the annual Canyon Chamber Dinner.

The Chamber gives this honor to a man who carries the attributes of dedication to the well-being of the community, integrity, character, patience, tolerance and strong practice of treating people well. Officer Jones accepted the award for his long-term dedication to the community of Canyon with a humble heart. Feb. 19 marked the beginning of his fourteenth year at Canyon High School after starting in Potter County in 1995. Jones said he has a personal goal of furthering the education of high schools kids in a safe environment and a passion for education that motivates Jones to better himself.

“Once I started working at Canyon High School, it was obvious I grew passionate for education,” Jones said. “I found it important to educate myself, understand that education is a huge priority and how my job as a police officer fits into the puzzle of overall education of students.”

Jones said that the community is supportive by their cooperation and acceptance of law enforcement.

“The majority of the credit goes to the community because they understand our roles and goals we’re trying to accomplish and that our officers are open to the idea of a high level of customer service,” Jones said. “Those two things working in conjunction make us. A report came out the other day that we’re the sixth safest city in the state of Texas.”

Jones said he was surprised about being nominated and overwhelmed to win the award.

“I would say it says less about Cody Jones and more about Canyon ISD, the police department and the Canyon Chamber of Commerce,” Jones said. “They have put me in a position to serve, and to do exactly what I wanted to do. I’m super grateful for it because I love what I do. I never wake up and don’t want to come to work.”
