Juniors to take three TSI tests this year

Juniors must take all three Texas Success Initiative (TSI) tests before the end of the school year.

The TSI is a college placement test which tests skills in math, reading and writing. Counselor Chris Fant said the TSI tests are part of a state-legislated program designed to improve student success in college.

“There are two components of the program,” Fant said. “The first is the assessment of students’ basic skills in reading, mathematics and writing. The second is developmental instruction to strengthen academic skills which need improvement.”

Every student will eventually take the TSI test at some point.

“Most all juniors are taking the TSI tests this year,” Fant said. “Seniors who did not get them completed last year are also welcome to take them as most will find their colleges require it. They can sign up in the counseling center.”

Students who wish to enroll in dual credit classes must take and pass the TSI needed for the class.

“Sophomores planning on taking dual credit next year will be offered the TSI early at the end of the semester or early next semester,” Fant said.

Seniors about to enroll in college may be exempt from TSI testing by meeting the minimum college readiness standards on the SAT or ACT tests, or by having successfully completed college-level English and math courses. Fant said if students have taken the TSI at Canyon High, a copy of students’ scores can be printed out in the counseling center.

“If students have any questions, they are welcome to come see me in the counseling center or ask their college what is needed,” Fant said.

Before taking the TSI, students must participate in a pre-assessment activity. Canyon High partners with Amarillo College and students can find the activity on the AC website. Practice questions for the TSI can be found on the TSI website.
