Canyon High will be classified 5A beginning 2014-2015
Canyon ISD will now be classified as 5A instead of 4A when competing in UIL events beginning in the 2014-2015 school year.
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) announced tentative district assignments Feb. 3. The category 6A was added to the district classifications. Canyon High will now play Caprock, Palo Duro, Randall, Dumas and Hereford. Before the new alignment, Canyon was classified as 4A and played Amarillo High instead of Hereford.
Principal Tim Gilliland said that this will not have a major affect on the school.
“The 6-man teams were moved up,” Gilliland said. “It’s just a number. Now, we have Hereford instead of Amarillo in our district, which is nice.”
