Ten HOSA students advance to state meet
Ten members of the HOSA program qualified for the State HOSA meet March 27-29 in San Antonio after placing in the Area HOSA meet last Saturday. Canyon HOSA bowl teams placed first and second in the HOSA bowl competition, and the Health Career display board placed second.
Seniors Michael Ammons, Josie Eck, Andres Cardenas-Casillas and sophomore Shawn Williams placed first place in the HOSA bowl competition while seniors Casady Adams, Abraham Tenorio, Jaziel Quintana and Stephen Rainwater placed second. Seniors Shannon Giles and Jamie Cornett placed second with their Health Career Display entry.
“HOSA bowl is exactly like science bowl, except with HOSA topics,” Ammons said. “It contains medical terminology, clinical conditions, HOSA history, parliamentary procedure, anything really medically related.”
Ammons said that to prepare for the competition, members of his HOSA bowl studied several medical, clinical conditions and anatomy and physiology books. The team began preparing in August and meets two times a week.
“It’s a lot of responsibility because you have to coordinate times to study and know where to be, and you have to watch out for your team,” Ammons said. “It’s not too bad, because I’m an older brother so I have to watch out for my siblings. That’s what HOSA is like, a big family. I love my HOSA bowl family.”
