Canned food drive to provide meals for families in need
Student council’s annual Food Drive will be accepting donations now until Nov. 14.
The donations raised go to families in need of meals during the holidays. Non-perishable food items can be taken to English classrooms, and monetary donations can be taken to the front office. One dollar equals five pounds of food.
“We gather canned food items and monetary donations for about two weeks before we take it all to the High Plains Food Bank located in Amarillo,” student council president Matthew Snell said. “We set a goal for ourselves to beat every year. At the end of the food drive, we collect the donation barrels and monetary donations, determine who the winning class is, and donate the money and food to the Food Bank.”
Snell said the student council involves the student body by hosting a competition between each grade to see which class can raise the most pounds of food.
“The prize for the winning class is a movie day,” Snell said. “All the other grades have to go to class while the winning grade gets to watch a movie from sixth period to the end of school.”
