The annual school musical “White Christmas” will open Nov. 21 and will play through Nov. 24.
“White Christmas” portrays the stories of Broadway stars and veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, played by seniors Christian Farren and Ryan Land, who follow the singing sister duo Betty and Judy Haynes, played by senior Morgan Finke and junior Bailey DeBerry, up to an Inn in Pinetree, Vermont. Upon arrival, Wallace and Davis find that the commanding officer for their unit during World War II, General Waverly, played by senior Tayten Martin, is attempting to run an unprofitable inn. Wallace and Davis devise a scheme to use their song-and-dance act to bring visitors to the inn and give Waverly the best Christmas present a man can receive.
“The type of dancing that we’re going to be doing is going to be a little bit different,” theater arts teacher David Yirak said. “A lot of the songs have kind of a jazz feel to them, which is really cool.”
Although the story is set in the 1950s, the music features a heavy influence from the 1920s and ‘30s.
“The music is incredible,” assistant choir director Kelli Harter said. “It’s very jazzy and bluesy and it definitely has that Frank Sinatra and that group of guys with that fun, awesome, rat pack feel. I think it just portrays the story and what’s going on in the story so well.”
More than 80 students will participate in other roles in the musical.
“We’ve got a huge chorus and a huge cast this year,” Harter said. “We have the four leads, but everybody else is involved. It’s going to be a huge stage with lots of stuff going on.”
Yirak said that White Christmas is a fun show that will put audiences in the holiday spirit.
“Be ready for a great time,” Yirak said. “We’re going to have lots of good character parts that are fun and enjoyable. You’ll see a lot of really talented kids.”
