News Channel 7’s Lindsey Stiner interviewed the entrepreneurship students who work in the school store The Eagles’ Nest for an Education Spotlight feature Sept. 3. The segment aired Sept. 12 during the evening newscasts.
This 2013-2014 school year is the second year of the school store, under the direction of business teacher Marcie Cook. Second year students lead and instruct new students who are training to be employees.
“I was very excited that they [News Channel 7] gave us that opportunity,” Cook said. “It really focused and highlighted the school store and showed what all the students have been doing.”
Cook said the students have put in much hard work during the three-year project.
“The experience is exciting that someone interviews us, and specifically for the student,” Cook said. “It was good for them to be put on the spot to have to answer the questions and think about what they have learned about the store.”
The entrepreneurship class allows students to work on internal organization such as management, accounting, marketing, ordering/receiving and human resources. Cook and the general managers supervise and direct the students who learn through hands-on instruction.
“The school store program has definitely taught students soft skills,” Cook said. “In addition to learning about how to run a business, they learn to get along with each other and show up to work on time. They gain valuable skills and learn more about themselves, what they are good at and what they need to work on.”
Senior Logan Hinders, a general manager at The Eagles’ Nest, said that being in the entrepreneurship class gives him a huge advantage. He is able to make mistakes in the classroom before he makes them in his own business.
“I get to learn skills that I would otherwise have to learn on the job,” Hinders said. “Here I am able to go into a job interview saying that I already know these skills, and that just sets me apart from people that haven’t had this opportunity. If you have the chance to take this class, I highly recommend that you take it.”
