Reconstruction around campus involves changes to the athletic field, possible security upgrades, and the creation of a new Career and Technology Education Center (CTE). Renovation of the current ag classroom and shop to become two Health Science Technology (HST) classrooms will begin in either May or June, due to the dramatic growth in programs. Reconstruction is scheduled to be completed before school the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year.
Discussion of reconstruction is not a new topic for CISD. Principal Tim Gilliland, a coach and teacher at CHS when the tragedy at Columbine occurred, said since that time constant discussion and actions have been taken toward the improvement of security and building new academic and athletic facilities. Decisions on all security upgrades have not been finalized.
“Our daily goal is that students are safe and have the best possible opportunity to learn,” Gilliland said. “The field and security considerations are part of the ongoing process to provide the best facilities possible to our staff and students.”
Gilliland said the changes will involve benefit and better protect all students and staff. He said possible security changes should not negatively affect those who follow the rules.
“Our facility may change, but it will not change the fact that Canyon High School is one of top high schools in Texas,” Gilliland said.
