Two Canyon ISD teams competed in the Texas Regional Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge at the Tarrant County College Auto Tech program garage in Fort Worth, Texas.
The teams took second and third place, maintaining their spot as the best teams in Texas according to Auto Tech teacher Courtney Lawrence.
“Both teams worked hand in hand together to practice so there was only a seven minute difference in time between the Canyon teams, and we both did well,” third place team member Brady Copely said.
The competition consisted of teams dissembling and reassembling car engines from identical small block Chevys as fast as possible. The team who completed the task with the least amount of penalties and adhering to all protocol in the shortest amount of time won.
“It was a lot harder than just practicing at the school,” Copley, as senior, said. “Competing against that many teams with an audience watching is completely different than just practicing.”
The only team to beat Canyon was the world record holding team from Eastern Oklahoma County Tech Center.
“It was hard competing against such a prestigious team,” Copely said. “We didn’t know what to expect but I enjoyed competing against such a good team.”
Third place team member Chris Helm said that with all the practice they were prepared and everyone had a lot of fun.
“I couldn’t ask for anything better,” Copely said.
Th second place team, Team Thermo-Tec, included captain Bryan Herrington, Beverly Gambrel, Corey Davis, Aaron Miller and BJ Muncy. The third place team, Team Painless Performance, included captain Chris Helm, Brady Copley, Zach McDonald (Randall), Matt Newsome (Randall) and Audie Munoz (Randall).
