Topping last year’s total by more than 20, students, 101 juniors, seniors and adults arrived in the upper commons to donate blood to the Coffee Memorial Blood Center Oct. 18. Those able to donate gave 68 units to be distributed to 31 healthcare facilities in the region. Participants received a t-shirt and a ticket to the 6th Street Massacre Haunted House.
Senior Abby Velasquez donated Thursday to help others in her community.
“It is important to donate because without people to give blood, those in need of it wouldn’t receive treatment,” Velasquez said.
Qualifications to donate included weighing at least 115 pounds, having no illnesses and taking no medications, having no tattoos or foreign travel within the past year, and being 17 years old with at least a 38 iron count in the blood sample.
Last year Canyon High School was named “Outstanding High School” by the Coffee Memorial Blood Center.
