I remember hearing that a plane had hit the World Trade Center and just casually chalking it up to pilot error or something going wrong with the air traffic control system. Later in the morning, I was watching live coverage on CNN with my students and we actually saw the second tower get hit. It happened so quickly that we didn’t even immediately realize what had happened. The memories of the chaos that unfolded, news from the Pentagon and Pennsylvania, and all of the uncertainty that followed still feel surreal to me. In my 16 years of teaching, that day and the day of the Columbine High School massacre stand out as the most difficult days to help students cope .
