When the Twin Towers were hit, I was teaching Texas History at the old junior high school, now Canyon Intermediate School. My classroom was out behind the school in an old portable. Each class had the old Channel One TVs in them, but the cable reception in the school was poor. The reception was perfect in the portable and I watched the morning news every day because I had first period conference. So I sat and watched in amazement the news coverage of an airplane that apparently had “accidently” hit one of the world Trade towers as I got ready for class. Then right before my eyes I watched a second plane hit the other tower. My classes watched the history in the making for the rest of the day! Unknown to me was an announcement that asked all teachers to keep their TVs off–I guess so as to not scare the students. The PA speaker in the portables did not work, so I watched with my students in oblivion as the course of our country was changed forever.
