Junior Alex Cordova, along with other art students, submitted his artwork to the Virtual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) at the regional level. Cordova’s artwork placed first in the state, earning him a medal and the honor of being among the best artists in the state.
“You submit your art at the regional level, and if you get a four on your score card, you go on to area,” Cordova said. “Then, at area, if you get a four, you go to district, and so on. I was excited and surprised when I found out I placed first. I didn’t think I would.”
The state competition was held in Houston.
“The trip was fun with my friends and Mrs. Pod,” Cordova said. “In the competitions, you go into a room and you tell the judge why you made your piece and what it represents. Then, on the other days we were there, we had free time.”
Cordova’s piece, called “Butterfly Kisses,” was crafted with black paint and blank CDs, and took him about three and half months to complete. Cordova said he competed with his art for the first time sophomore year.
“Mrs. Pod took me to the competition last year, but my artwork was too similar to too many other pieces,” Cordova said. “I told myself I’d do better this year. This year was different.”
Cordova’s painting is of himself and his two-year-old daughter Janessa.
“My daughter is my inspiration,” Cordova said. “She’s what gives me motive to draw.”
