Joining other top choir members in the state, seniors Trey Andrews, Josiah Robinson and Haly Cordell will sing in the All-State choir concert in San Antonio Feb. 13.
Students traveled to Abilene last weekend to audition for the choir. To audition, choir students had to perform three cuts from the six pieces they were given, sing chosen scales and sight-read a piece. Of the twenty people per section who tried-out, in men’s, the top eight were taken. In women’s, the top ten were taken. Out of those, the top four were placed in mixed choir, and the others were separated into men’s and women’s choirs. Andrews and Robinson made the men’s choir, and Cordell made the women’s choir.
Robinson said he enjoys getting to use his talents to compete.
“In choir, there are four auditions: District, Region, Pre-Area, and Area,” Robinson said. “At every audition it gets more and more selective and less people go on. The area competition is the state audition; if you make it at area, you sing at state.”
Andrews said that he was very nervous to audition.
“To prepare myself, I drank lots of water and sight-read,” said Andrews. “When I found out I made it, I was ecstatic and in disbelief. I’m proud to have accomplished something that we consider big in the choir.”
Cordell said the hardest part of the competition was waiting for results.
“When the man comes out with the papers telling the placings, you get a kind of adrenaline rush,” Cordell said. “I was very nervous; I think everyone was. It was a very long day, but in the end, it was worth it.”
Robinson said he enjoys the friendship that all of the different schools share.
“There is no real animosity between us,” Robinson said. “We all hang out together. The whole process is very strenuous, very tiring, but very fun.”
