Monday, the accounting UIL team will compete at the State level for the first time in school history. The team has been dormant for seven years until current accounting coach, Stephanie Bass, took it over two years ago.

“The last time they had an accounting team was in 2018,” Bass said. “Until I took over the program two years ago.”
The team began preparations for the competition in January, and as UIL dates approached, the team practiced more often.
“We run through packets that we’ve been given through previous UIL contests,” Bass said. “We go over some of the questions that they’ve seen in the past, then we get into our book. We start with memorizing formulas and figuring out what words mean.”
Each packet has 80 questions with different scenarios, with 60 minutes to get all the questions finished. The only resources students can use are calculators. Junior Cole DeBow has created an ‘Accounting Bible’ to help him prepare for the contest.
“It’s a 45-page Google Doc with formulas, old tests and cheat sheets,” Debow said. “There’s a lot of room for improvement, and I think we can do well at state.”
Bass said the competition is going to be tough, but is excited to see how the team competes.
“We’ll do pretty well,” junior Casen Stephenson said. “If we keep studying the way we have. We might not get first, but I think we’ll definitely be up there.”
