Sophomores continue ‘legacy of giving’ with Tatum Tough color run
The sophomore class will donate $1200 to the Tatum Tough Foundation as part of their “legacy of giving.” To earn the money, the sophomores hosted a 5K color run for their 41 participants Saturday, May 4 at Canyon High School.
“I liked what the run was for,” senior Bayley Robinson said. “I also thought it would be a fun experience. My boyfriend and I walked most of the time which made it fun. Everything cost $30. It came with the powder, the tee shirt, sunglasses and a bracelet.”
The run began at 2 p.m. when volunteers and participants threw celebratory powder.
“At the beginning, everyone threw the powder up in the air,” said Annsleigh McCraw, vice president of the sophomore class. “Then they ran around the school twice, then around the track four times. As they were running around, the class officers and other people were throwing powder on them.”
McCraw said if participants didn’t want to run, they could choose from other activities.
“At the end of the run there were games, coloring books and bubbles for kids,” McCraw said. “There were also two live bands as well.”
McCraw said the officers want to do annual projects to benefit others.
“Instead of doing a big gift at the end of our senior year, we decided to do a ‘legacy of giving,'” McCraw said. “That’s our class motto, which means we do a little bit of giving each year. Freshman year we did a bunch of meals for the teachers, and sophomore year we decided to do the color run.”
Sophomore class sponsor Kimberly Sharber said the class officers have a goal to raise money for local charities.
“Next year we are wanting to do something for either I Heart Canyon or for the Snack Pak 4 Kids program here,” Sharber said. “It’s going to be huge, we hope.”
Sharber said the officers have taken over these ideas and fundraisers.
“The class officers absolutely killed it this year,” Sharber said. “May is a very busy time for everybody, so it’s hard to get people to commit to something, but every single sophomore who signed up to help showed up early and worked very hard.”
Sharber said the sophomore class plans to also give back to the school.
“I asked a lot of kids in this class what they thought about our motto, ‘A Legacy of Giving,’” Sharber said. “Everybody was on board. The Tatum Foundation is from right here. We know it’s going to make an impact on somebody’s life and were so happy to help.”
McCraw said the class motto is important because it defines how the sophomore class is different from other classes.
“We want to have this ‘legacy of giving’ because we want to give back to the community,” McCraw said. “This legacy is far more important then one big gift at the end of high school.”
