ASL Honor Society to host book fair Sat., Dec. 10
The American Sign Language Honor Society will host the Barnes & Noble Book fair this Saturday, Dec. 10.
Throughout the day, ASL students will perform Christmas songs and two Christmas stories, “Santa Comes to Texas” and “Texas Night before Christmas.” Barnes & Noble Booksellers will give 10% of those purchases to ASLHS. Customers who want to donate to the ASLHS need to tell the cashier while checking out. The money raised at the book fair will help the ASLHS host an ASL workshop and concert in April.
“It’s a great chance to see what American Sign Language Honor Society is all about,” said Arin Wall, ASLHS co-president. “Also, the book fair helps raise money for the Panhandle Council for the Deaf.”
The ASLHS will also run a gift wrapping station at the front. The tips from the station will go to the Panhandle Council for the Deaf.
“I really love that the Honor Society is not just about the language but about helping the Deaf community,” Wall said. “Our ASL 3 classes have been working so hard to make this great. So have our ASL 1 and 2 classes.”
ASL teacher Traci Prather also said the classes have worked hard.
“The book fair is a time for us to show the community the talent and skill of our ASL students,” Prather said. “The students have translated English songs into the language they’re learning. This is a community service outreach.”
