Band members advance to Area competition

Band students competed in the UIL Pre-Area audition Dec. 5 at Amarillo High School.

Out of the 27 students that auditioned, 21 band students qualified for the UIL Area contest.

“I have made it to the Area contest twice before, but this year I am really trying to make it to state,” junior Madison Stephens said. “I have been practicing on this music since August for at least 30 minutes each night, so I think my chances are pretty good.”

The Area contest will take place on Jan. 11 in Abilene.

“The Area audition is so much more intense than the All-Region and Pre-Area auditions because there are a lot more players who are trying just as hard as you are to reach the same goal,” Stephens said.

If the players qualify for the State band, they will be given three days to learn the music before travelling to perform with fellow qualifiers.

“If I were to make the State band, it would be everything I’ve been working for this entire year,” Stephens said. “Making the State band is something that is difficult to accomplish and I would be very excited to be a part of it.”
