End It CHS, an awareness campaign on the reality of human trafficking, promoted the movement during Fair on the Square Saturday Oct. 5.
The group passed out flyers with information and spoke to the passing crowd with a goal of spreading awareness of modern-day slavery and the truth of how close it is to home.
“We were able to have a presence at this weekend’s Fair on the Square, allowing us the opportunity to talk with several people from the community,” said Stefanie Suto, speech teacher and sponsor of End It CHS. “This gives the students the opportunity to witness the reactions of people, both positive and negative, while teaching them that they have a voice and can make a very real difference.”
Senior Jaziel Quintana participated Saturday and said that the volunteers received a variety of feedback from different people.
“Most people didn’t care,” Quintana said. “But those who did took great interest in it, and we believe that they are going to get involved.”
Suto said that anyone looking to get involved can come and visit with her to discover more opportunities in the organization.
“We meet a couple different times a month after school and from that we learn about different things that are going on and discuss different ways to raise awareness,” Suto said. “We understand awareness won’t change the problem, but until people are aware, the problem won’t change.”
