The school’s production of The Sound of Music opens tonight and will be performed again Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. with a Sunday matinée show at 2:30 p.m.
The Sound of Music is set in the 1930s and follows the story of an Austrian nun, Maria Rainier, played by senior Marissa Hernandez, who leaves her convent to become the governess for the family of a naval officer, played by junior Christian Farren. Maria must now face the challenge of taming the troublesome Von Trapp children, returning music to the Von Trapp home, and protecting the family that she has grown to love.
“I think we’re telling the story well,” theatre teacher and musical director David Yirak said one week before the musical premiered. “The play has very diverse characters, and the cast does a good job bringing those out.”
Both Yirak and assistant choir director Kelli Harter said they are looking forward to seeing the elements of the play come together.
“It’s going to be an incredible production,” Harter said. “I’m excited to see the singing, the acting, and the orchestration.”
According to Yirak, The Sound of Music is a very good musical theater experience.
“I think the music and the story go along so well,” Yirak said. “The music is so wonderful, and the story behind it has some humor and some drama.”
The cast and tech crew have been rehearsing since early September.
“There’s going to be some great performances,” Yirak said. “There’s just a strong cast and the audience will be entertained.”
