When senior Carrey Thompson became the new mascot, Rocky the Eagle traded feathers for a football jersey.
Thompson’s original plan to try out for cheerleader failed because of scheduling conflicts, so he turned his attention to being mascot.
“It suits me more than cheerleading because I have more freedom, and it gives me a chance to encourage my school,” Thompson said.
Performing as mascot turned out to be a better fit for Thompson.
“Being mascot helps encourage me to be who I am because it gives me an excuse to go crazy sometimes,” Thompson said. “And it gives me a chance to encourage my teammates and my school.”
Wearing the costume does present some challenges, including keeping fluids up to prevent dehydration.
“I like to drink Pedialyte because it’s hot in the suit,” Thompson said. “It’s an acquired taste.”
Cheering in an eagle suit has proved to be a complicated but memorable experience for Thompson.
“The feet are really big so last Tuesday at the volleyball game I tripped twice on the stairs,” Thompson said. “It was pretty intense.”
Thompson advises aspiring mascots to be outgoing.
“You need to be willing to be open, and fearless,” Thompson said. “You need to be willing to be embarrassed.”
In addition, Thompson said mascots need to be full of school spirit..
“It has to be someone who has a heart for their school,” Thompson said. “And someone who is willing to go the distance for their team.”
