Students hurry about, absorbed in the work of cooking and plating their food. Everything must be perfect for the judges who will decide which students move on to the next level of the Teen Chef competition at the Art Institute of Dallas.
Senior Brittnee Gupton, the only winner from Canyon high, placed first in the dessert category for her class and second in overall competition.
“The winners were determined by points,” Gupton said. “I had 58 points, and the girl who won had 58.3 points. I didn’t know who all was making desserts. It was pretty nerve wracking competing against the other students.”
Students who won the contest received the opportunity to have their dishes sold next week as part of the Campus Café menu.
“I made Blueberry Cheesecake Ice Cream because I enjoy baking and dessert making more than actual cooking,” Gupton said.
The Teen Chef competition is sponsored by Food Network. The student that wins the final round in Houston wins a scholarship and a day of working in the Food Network kitchens.
